Busy, Wonderful Week

This week was a week full of mixed emotions. In many ways it was one of the greatest weeks I’ve had in my short time here in Baltimore, but in some ways it was pretty rough. My kids are pretty ready to be done with school, and my room is a sauna, so it’s pretty hard for them to stay focused. I think I may buy them all leis next week and we might pretend that our class is really in the Bahamas. They might be distracted enough from the heat that we may actually get through more than one thing, or they may be way too distracted, and we may not get through anything at all. Regardless, it should distract them.

I finally finished up my finals last night. What a relief! I don’t ever have any tests in my program, but I sure do write a lot of papers. Last night I wrapped up 36 pages on my last final for the semester. Sometimes I wonder why professors assign such beastly papers, and I ask myself, will she really read all 36 pages of all of our papers? That seems like a lot of reading, and a lot of grading to get done in the next four days. While it was really nice to be done with another semester, I start summer school on Tuesday night, so in reality there really isn’t a hiatus until late June.

Now, onto the things that made this week absolutely wonderful! First, I discovered a bocce court here in Baltimore (When I say discovered, I mean this in the loosest way possible. I mean I went to a bocce court I’d heard talk of, and brought some balls with me in hopes of playing). It’s in Little Italy, and it really is like stepping back into Italy. There are flags hanging everywhere, the benches are painted red, white, and green, and the men who were playing where first generation immigrants who had a median age of about 73. While we didn’t actually get to play bocce (we showed up on tournament night) we did get to watch and rub elbows with these wonderful men, and I think we made some pretty good friends. They did invite us to join the league and fed us pizza while we watched them play.

Second wonderful event of the week, it was 31 cent cone night at Baskin Robbins. We went three times. Delicious.

Friday night we played sand volleyball in the harbor. Pretty much I think this has now become a regularly scheduled event, after only one night of playing. The courts are just open courts, and they are literally right on the water. The sand is some of the best sand I’ve ever played in, too. So, while I am mediocre at best, it was still really fun and I think I’ll spend many a Friday night down in the harbor.

I did also have a chance to go hiking yesterday. I must note that I really struggle calling what we did hiking, because it was really more like a walk through the woods, but it was still wonderful to be out in nature.

And finally, one of my best friends from Logan was in DC this weekend, so I did get a chance to go down and see her and her husband tonight. I LOVE when people come to visit and it we had a really great time. The weather was GORGEOUS, and we spent a good three or four hours just walking around the monuments and talking. It’s always so great to just catch up with people. Two things I love most: friends and walks. You really can’t go wrong with a combination like that.

So, to say the least, it’s been a little busy around here. But I’d much rather be busy than have nothing to do. And for the most part I really love all the things that are keeping me busy, so I consider myself pretty lucky. I’m sorry if this all sounded just like a list of all the things I did this week, but once I started typing, I realized what a great week it really was, and that in the midst of all the work and school, I’ve really had an awesome week, and I should be really grateful for that. (and that was a run-on sentence if I’ve ever seen one…)

Alright, because I’ve done a lot of really great things I haven’t gotten a lot of sleep this week. So I think I better aim to get at least a little bit tonight. Hope all is well. Sorry I was really long-winded tonight. Cheers.
