I fell down the stairs yesterday morning on my way to they gym at 5:30. It was early. The stairway was dark. And I had put a book on the stairs so I would remember it for one of my students. That book will NEVER be forgotten.
Just a little FYI on falling, from ever-safety-conscious Nancy:
- Falls kill over 12,000 people a year, with 1,200 deaths occurring at work. (Lucky I didn't die!)
- Falls are the biggest cause of accidental death after traffic incidents. (Don't worry, I was involved in both yesterday. Again, I'm apparently extra lucky to be alive!)
- Falls are the most common cause of deadly incidents at home.
- Thirty-three thousand people a year are disabled from falling on stairs. (I think I'll recover, although my swimming career which has recently skyrocketed may be put on hold for a minute, my shoulder is REALLY sore.)
- Many people are injured with strains, sprains, and broken and fractured bones from falls each year. (I think I fit into THIS category.)
- Most falling incidents can be prevented if you look where you’re going, know what hazards to look for, and maintain a clean and safe work area. (Yes, this is key.)

I'm glad you're not dead.
You are soooo lucky! Statistics show that you were in grave danger of dying. You may want to consider riding in a three wheeled motor vehicle. Your chances of dying are 1 in 11,969,826...see

Two points:
1. Didnt we talk at Christmas regarding the danger of the stairs and the lack of light therein?
2. How is this falling post labeled "sports"? Would a new title of misfortunes or calamities be more fitting?
Glad you are okay.
Other questions: Did you get hit by a car? Did your car hit a car, or a car hit your car? We really need details...
Ann,
You did not address the most important question. One that we all thought about but just assumed it was not there..
"Did anyone see you fall down the stairs"
I have always believed that if you do something that can be embarassing and it is not witnessed, It didn't happen.
Glad your OK.

Rich,
No one, thankfully, was awake at five a.m. to watch me fall down the stairs. So maybe it didn't happen....
As for the car, Lee, all is well. I thought it was minor when it initally happened. I am totally fine. I just hit ice and slid into a guard rail. However, the body shop called today. Total damage: Five Grand. Apparently not as okay as I thought.
Oh well, that's why we pay insurance, right?
