A good friend of mine is a pediatrics resident at the University of Maryland. A few weeks ago when he was working in the nursery we were talking about the number of babies born with extra fingers.
I didn't believe him when he talked about the high number of children with an extra digit. He did say the extra finger is always cut off before they leave for home.
Fast forward to today.
I was having lunch bunch with a group of my students who had earned the reward of eating lunch with me (who doesn't want THAT reward?). I don't know how, but the kids got on the topic of being born with extra fingers. Three of the six kids had been born with this phenomenon!
I saw their scars and everything of where the finger had been removed.
Weird. Just weird.

Weird
I saw it a lot! More common where parents are on some kind of medication or using drugs, but still not too uncommon around here.
this post blew my mind. so much, in fact, that i just spent the past 30 minutes researching polydactyly. and i have to say, i secretly wish my left hand had an extra pinkie. it would make viola playing much easier. :) 1 in 500 births. crazy huh!
Stace,
I hate to break the news that the extra fingers typically don't have bones in them so the really don't work...they are mostly just there.
I am happy to say that they saw five fingers on each hand and five toes on each foot of our baby.
Good thing because this post would have gotten me a little worried.
Who'd a thunk?
