Police

I'm pretty sure as a kid I only every saw or interacted with police when Officer Friendly came to school.

Not so now. And it doesn't seem out the norm. But on a day like today when I stop and think about their presence now, it's much more than I wish I needed.

I teach across from a LARGE police station. School starts as shifts change. There are a lot of officers coming, and a lot of them going.

There was an undercover arrest across from my house today. Not usual. But not unusual.

The officer that is needed to protect the first grade boy from the parent he doesn't live with.

The officer that stands in front of school to make sure nothing is brewing.

The officers that are needed before a parent teacher conference can begin.

Really?

Yes. Really.

Good ol' Officer Friendly. I wonder when people started calling him that.

One time in D.C. we saw no fewer than 12 undercover agents arrest someone who had just walked out of our building. Never a dull moment. I can imagine how crazy public schools might be there. (michelle's sister.)
